The universe consists of only two things: space, and objects in space. Space is nothingness, literally. No-thing-ness. It sounds like a something because we give it a name, “space”. So we’ve attached a word to it and we tend to think of anything with a word attached as a thing or a something. But space is nothing.
Usually, you don’t pay attention to space. Your attention is rooted in the objects in space.
Music is similar. Music doesn’t just consist of the notes. It also consists of the interval between the notes. The silence. We pay attention to the notes, and don’t notice the interval of silence between them. The thing is, without that interval of silence, music could not exist.
Without the space between them, objects could not exist.
Your mind consists of awareness, and objects in awareness. You tend to pay attention to the objects. When you practice paying attention to space, or silence, it can serve as a gateway into your own awareness, so that you pay attention to that. You become aware of your own awareness. You become aware of yourself.
Then when you look up at a starry sky, you realize the universe is your own consciousness you are looking at, externalized. As above, so below. As without, so within.
The universe consists of only two things: space, and objects arising in space.
You are that space.
God is in the space between your thoughts.
